How to Bust Out of a Business Plateau

Finding yourself in the midst of a business plateau can be one of the most frustrating experiences for any blog or business owner.

It can often feel like no matter what you do, you just can’t get out of that rut.

Ever been there?

I certainly have, and in this week’s vlog post I detail exactly what we’ve been doing to bust out of this plateau.

We put out new videos every Thursday! Subscribe to make sure you don’t miss any. http://bit.ly/1NkDisM

How to Bust Out of a Business Plateau

There are 4 specific things that we’ve been doing in our business to break out of this plateau.

1) “Blow up” the business

Been doing the same things for years? Or maybe you think you’ve been trying new things, but in reality? Just more of the same. Think about how you can make a drastic change or shift.

We killed Location 180 and doubled down on Location 180, which was a huge and scary decision for us. But so far seems to have been the right move.

2) Focus on the marketing tasks you enjoy, and do them CONSISTENTLY

That last word is key. I’ve found a lot of success and enjoyment with Instagram for my golf business, so rather than spending time on 6 different social media networks or business strategies – focus on 1 or 2.

That’s what we’ve decided to do with Location Rebel. Check out our new instagram account here.

3) Promote.

No, REALLY Promote. I used to think by sending out a couple tweets and an email that I was promoting – but that’s about 10% of what I should have been doing. See what I mean in the video above.

4) Set Goals and Leverage Technology

Flying by the seat of your pants only works for so long. We’ve been talking, planning, and goal setting for weeks. And we finally have a project management tool that we’re sticking with.

Did you like this vlog? If so, let me know! Want to see something different or think I should improve aspects of it? Tell me! I’d love to hear your feedback.

  1. Sean you are so right. Being consistent is the goal to breaking through, maintaining and growing last success!

So many great freelancers fall off the face of the freelancing planet because they get stuck. I am coming off a three week dry spell. It sucked.

Guess what. I just closed three contracts and am talking about two more. That means I went from not working to $6k in contracts.

It wasn’t a trick or luck it was staying focused that got me there!

  2. Hi Sean!

This vlog is really timely for me, so thanks.

I haven’t “plateaued” in my business yet, but that’s because – despite tested products, 100+ client reviews, and a refreshing / unique approach to a saturated industry (dating) – it hasn’t quite started climbing the mountain yet.. which was driving me NUTS.

After finally getting a website up, my products on my own site (off third party sites like Udemy), writing to my email list, doing guest posts, podcasts, radio, you name it, I wasn’t getting the traffic or conversions I knew I should be.

My gut was saying I wasn’t communicating to my audience the right way. Because doesn’t matter if you have amazing products – ever if your headline / subject line / hook isn’t engaging enough to pull people into your copy and lead them to the products, they’ll never even know about them.

Solution: the past 6 months I’ve been “blowing things up in a big way” by completely overhauling my copy behind the scenes: new website, new opt-in emails, new product names, new opt-in offer title (same content, just new title) – all going live in the next week or two.

“Blow things up” box officially checked 😉

The overhaul also includes getting active on the social media I enjoy. I LOVED your Twitter example because – as you know – that’s how I connected with one of my top influencers (+ your friend) Vanessa Van Edwards, got invited to her meet-up in New York a week in advance, and made it happen.

Because of that trip and meeting her, I’m going to enroll in her Body Language Trainer program in January and may even do a study for her on the dating front with one of her colleagues.

Wow this comment became a novel..

Ok, wrapping up, thanks for the awesome tips – they made me feel even more confident I’m doing things that will start taking me + my biz to the next level.

PS congrats on the re-branding, site looks great!

    1. Sean says:

      Camille,

This is super inspiring to me for a number of reasons.

First off, most people who hit those roadblocks early on would give up – so the fact you recognized things werent working the way you wanted, and then made the change is awesome to see.

Also, you’re not afraid to figure out what you want and to go after it (like meeting Vanessa for instance). I’m really excited to follow along and see where you take things from here!
