Are you new to Location Rebel? New to lifestyle design altogether? Let us know your story. Introduce yourself in this thread!
I'll start!
I'm J. D. Bentley, a freelance web designer and developer who specializes in WordPress. I started on my lifestyle design journey (before I knew there was such a thing) in September of 2007 when I got so sick of my last "real" job that I just quit. I had no idea where I'd go or what I'd do after that. I was an unemployed college dropout who wasn't particularly good at anything (so I thought.)
Not long after I quit my job I accidentally fell into a freelance blogging position writing reviews for cheap. Once I saw that freelancing was actually possible, I started focusing more on design, especially web design which had always been a secret passion of mine.
Then about a year ago I read Tim Ferriss' book 4-Hour Work Week. It changed my perspective completely. I had always wanted to travel, always wanted to do a round-the-world trip, but I would have never dreamed that there was a certain kind of lifestyle that could make that possible indefinitely.
I didn't immediately put the principles from the book into use. I only got serious about it in July when I started Wage Slave Rebel, a blog I use to share my philosophy, experiences and experiments of the last couple years.
I'm currently developing a more reliable system for my freelancing business as well as a few other automated income ideas.
That's where I'm at now. So...
Now I'm excited to find out about everyone else!Blog: Wage Slave Rebel
I am Sean Ogle and in May of 2009 I started to document my foray into the world of lifestyle design with my blog Location 180. When I began, I really had no idea what I was getting into. All I knew was that I had a passion for travel and creating the free time to experience the things that are really important to me in life.
Over the past couple of months, the blog and my life has evolved in ways that I never thought possible, and I continue to write about how things are constantly changing around me. I have spent the last two months devising a plan for how to improve a job that I am not passionate about, and if necessary leave altogether to travel and build the business I have always wanted to start.
I am extremely excited to see what the Location Rebel community becomes. My hope is that we can turn it into a place where lifestyle designers, LIPs, dreamers, doers and everyone else can collaborate and share ideas as they experience the world the way they have chosen.
I'm Colin Wright, and I run Exile Lifestyle (exilelifestyle.com), a blog where I write articles relates to lifestyle design, minimalism, being an LIP, entrepreneurship, sustainability, and lots of other things that interest me.
I started my first business when I was 19, and since then I've worked dozens of jobs and started a handful of businesses, the most recent of which really took off (a sustainable design studio in Los Angeles) enough for me to take it mobile. So here I am, in Buenos Aires, running my business, learning all I can, preparing for my next move and e-talking to you fine folks!
Would love to make more connections in the online and real world community, so feel free to drop me a message any time.
Hey, Colin! Great to see you here. Welcome to the community.
I didn't know you had so much experience with businesses. I'm struggling to get just one stable so hopefully you can help me out on here. Can't wait for the day I can take it mobile. I'm *really* aiming for six months to a year.Blog: Wage Slave Rebel
Awesome idea... love the forum format for the lifestyle design community. Could be an excellent way to network and meet like minded thinkers. Looking forward to seeing how it all develops. Good work!
I am looking forward to your contributions to the forum as you guys have very different perspectives on the world! Thanks for stopping by!Becoming Location Independent is easier than you think...
I am Rasheed and I run the Present Day Nomad (http://PresentDayNomads.com)blog, which I started in June, because I love traveling and living a stress free life, hence the original tag line of "Living Life On Your Terms"
I currently run two different profitable businesses from home, that I am working on making passive income generators. I am passionate about people living their lives on their terms, and have been talking anybody and everybody who will lend a listening ear. I am creating a vision for a business that will utilize this passion and I am looking forward to launching it on Halloween. I Plan on making it a fun and exciting business for myself, and a source of inspiration and encouragement for those who want to break the mold and go their own way.
I am grateful for Sean and JD for launching this site, as it is a great idea and will bring like minded people in one place to network and benefit from each other.
I am looking forward to being an integral part of the community.
I'm Kristin Norris. You can find me poking around the PNW world (until further notice) over at Find Yourself Lost (findyourselflost.com)
Let's see. Short about me... About me: short. In stature, not in personality or ambition.
I studied Theater and Film Performance in college, jumped to LA (as was the norm) and after a couple years of serving tables got fed up with the minimum wage just to get by and keep my flexible hours so I could go on auditions and be told 'thanks we'll call you' deal. So I studied massage, opened my first business as a mobile massage therapist and personal trainer in LA. Found that that job (though flexible in hours) required me to actually stay in one place. So I booked a killer internship over at Colin is My Name (colinismy.name) learned the ins and outs of web design and here I am, a year and a half later in Sunny Seattle (because it hasn't rained a day since I've been here...I feel a little cheated) and running my own design studio out of a charming downtown high-rise studio apartment.
phew. And take a breath.
I'm super excited about this forum. Great idea, guys, to get this set up.
@ Kristin Seattle is one of the BEST places in the world to be on a sunny day. Enjoy it, cherish it, love it, because in about 3-6 weeks it will be gone until next June! Thanks for stopping by, and looking forward to hearing more from you!
@Rasheed I know I as well am looking forward to you being an integral part of the site-Welcome!Becoming Location Independent is easier than you think...
This feels a little like a family reunion to me. I'm connected to everyone in one way or another, whether it's reading your blogs or leaving comments or getting comments, but I don't know any of you as personally as I'd like.
Haha, Kristin and I were actually just talking about how cool it would be to travel around and visit each other in real life. I think when I'm back in the states I'll have to stop around and say hey to everybody who's still around. Put a handshake with the name and avatar :)
My name is LifeExcursion but my mother makes me go by the pseudonym David Damron.
I currently am living in Northern California and just living life the best I can. I run LifeExcursion.com which is this horrible site you definitely should not check out unless you want to become this incredible minimalist, a productive person, a healthy and fit workout god, and/or financially stable. Who really wants to know anything about that?!
This site looks like it is going to be amazing!!! Can't wait to check out more
First let me say congratulations JD for quitting your last "real" job man! there are too many ways to make an income than having to work a job you hate. I am with you all the way.
My name is Brad Chaffee, and I started blogging in April of 2008, when I started enemyofdebt.com. My passion to help others avoid financial slavery has kept me at it and I couldn't be happier. I currently deliver pizzas for Papa Johns Pizza while I work my way through school, raise my kids and start my business. I am currently working to become a certified financial counselor, and volunteer by helping people at my church take control of their money. I also lead and coordinate FPU as well.
I also am a regular contributor at a new site called the Self-Reliance-Exchange.com, where we cover a HUGE array of topics related to self-reliance and self-sufficiency. I am a huge believer in personal responsibility and believe that most people do not live up to their potential because they instead decide to settle and live the status quo that society told them that was normal. I think people have the power to empower themselves by learning to do for themselves instead of depend on or blame others for their place in life.
About 6 or 7 years ago I became a self development NERD BALL. I cannot seem to get enough of it. Whether it is reading any book I can find that might help me grow, or buying audio book after audio book, I have immersed myself into trying to become a balanced, content, satisfied, and happy individual. Audio books especially. When I am in my car I am not listening to music, no no no. I am in what I call my university on wheels. I get picked on at work because I am seen as boring but I do not mind. I see what they do not and that is knowledge and better understanding of myself as well as the world around me. That makes me happy.
I love hiking, skiing, blogging, golfing, and especially love spending time with my family.
I am John Bardos of JetSetCitizen.com. I have been living in Japan for the last 12 years with regular travel to Europe, Asia and North America. My wife and I are just about to begin a more nomadic adventure with the goal of spending 2 or 3 months in various countries around the world.
I own an English school in Japan and I am working on some teaching related internet projects. If you have any questions about teaching English abroad, don't be afraid to ask. Also, if any of you have experience teaching children English, please let me know. Maybe there are some projects we can do together.
Well, I'm from Brazil and at the moment I'm living in Australia to learn English. I'm doing Cambridge Course, because on next year I'm going to start a Business course here, so I really hope until there my english would be perfect. Travel it's my life. Trips and books are part of my life, and I also have plans to open an English school in Brazil. But, for now it is just a plan. This is a great idea, and I hope to learn a lot here.
@enemyofdebt - I really love your story. You deliver pizza, raise your kids, go to school and start a business. That really gives me hope for the rest of us. Most of us don't have nearly as many responsibilities and have accomplished far less than you. Good luck with everything!
@JetSetCitizen - Glad to see you here, John! I knew you were in Japan, but I had no idea you had been there for so long. That's really cool. I'd never even thought to ask what sort of business you are in. Owning an English school makes your story one of the most unique I've heard so far. Usually it's web design or consulting or something. I'm glad to see someone dominating life with a "real-world" business. I think even though I've made the conscious decision to live an awesome life on my own terms, I've already limited myself by saying a 'real-world' business wouldn't work for what I want. You are proof that it's not true! I hope you're able to meet some interesting co-conspirators here!Blog: Wage Slave Rebel
I didn't know you owned the school either John, very impressive.
I am excited to see so many people coming by and writing introductions! I am learning things already about people I thought I knew fairly well. Keep it up!Becoming Location Independent is easier than you think...
